Christmas Facts: Jingle Bells

Jingle Bells was the first song to be broadcast from space. On 16 December 1965, Gemini 6 astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra had a joke with the ground control station. They reported: "We have an object that looks like a satellite moving from north to south, probably in polar orbit ... I see a command module and eight smaller modules in front of it. The pilot of the command module is wearing a red suit." The astronauts then pulled out a secret harmonica and a bell band and broadcast their performance of the song Jingle Bells. The harmonica and the jingle band were the first musical instruments to be played in space. They are now in the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
