Step by step: How to cancel your GEMA contract

The following steps will allow you to terminate your GEMA contract on time and demonstrably. First, gather all the documents, then the rest will be quick.

1. Check contract documents. Please find your customer number, the contract start date, and most importantly, the contract duration variant (monthly, quarterly, or annually). You can find this information on your last invoice, contract confirmation, or in your online customer portal.
2. Calculate the next possible termination date. Using your notice period and the deadline stipulated in the contract, determine the earliest date on which you can cancel. When sending by post, also include buffer time as the date of receipt by GEMA is decisive, not the postmark.
3. Submit termination via the GEMA customer portal. According to GEMA, the intended method of cancellation is online: in the portal, under „My Contracts", select the relevant contract, click „Cancel Contract", enter the cancellation date and reason, and submit. Save the confirmation page as proof.
4. Additionally, secure in written form by registered mail. If you are missing portal access or need to definitively prove your access, you should also send the cancellation in writing by registered mail with return receipt to the GEMA General Directorate. Please use the sample letter below.
5. Request and archive confirmation of termination. Get the specific contract end date confirmed in writing and keep the confirmation and proof of postage permanently on file.

Digital Forced Termination: Why GEMA Redirects to the Online Portal

From 2024/25, GEMA is largely transitioning its customer service to digital processes and directing cancellations to its online customer portal.
